Stampede VXL Brushless RTR w/ 7 Cell Battery/Chr Review
On the recommendation of some friends, I picked Stampede VXL Brushless RTR truck up to see for myself what it is capable of. When it arrived, I bought some LiPo batteries (5400 Mah 20C 3-cell 11.1V), charged them up, and plugged them in. WOW!! This thing is FAST! It’s electric, so I didn’t wake the neighbors. The brushless motor Traxxas puts in the Stampede VXL can handle up to 12.4 Volts of power, which makes for an exciting bash session. Wheelies? How high and how long? Stab the sky, and as long as you have room!! As tall as the Stampede is, however, makes it a bit "tippy" if cornered too fast, but that’s true of most RC Monster Trucks.
In the dirt, it’s fun to watch the tires balloon, as centrifugal force makes them "grow". With a light trigger finger, it’s easy enough to drive in the dirt throwing power slides and drifting the corners. On pavement, watch your speed and be easy on the brakes, as they are strong enough to send the truck flipping and cartwheeling. Reverse is also a challenge. I have an aftermarket Transmitter, and reverse is just as fast as forward! It’s cool to stab the brakes and turn, then punch forward!
After that first bash-a-thon, I bought some hop-ups for it, to see just how fast I could get it to go. How’s 67 MPH on a radar gun grab you? I had to upgrade to an 8000Mah 30C 3-cell 11.1V LiPo battery to get there, and they certainly aren’t cheap! This little truck is NOT recommended for beginners, as it has capabilities that far exceed the experience levels of most kids. Fortunately, Traxxas makes an XL-5 version of the Stampede that better fits the role of an RC car that kids can enjoy, without endangering the local dog or cat population!
One last note…Aftermarket parts for this truck are relatively inexpensive, compared to the T-Maxx and Revo models Traxxas makes. This makes them much easier to upgrade. My own Stampede doesn’t look like the picture above, anymore. It looks more like Tom Meentz’s "Maximum Destruction" now (yes, I watch "Monster Jam"!)!
